Itinerant builders help a bar build a deck on their roof in Dali, Yunnan Province
Dali in Yunnan Province was, and still is, a backpacker haven, even after the crowds of "regular" tourists found out about the beauty of the mountains and the lakes and the chilled out old town in between.
In this picture, an itinerant carpenter from Germany, known as a Wandergesellen ("carpenter" or "Wandering Brother") helps the Bad Monkey Bar build a deck on the roof. The carpenter stayed for six weeks, building various improvements before heading back out on the road. It's an old tradition for journeymen carpenters in Germany to travel far and wide, offering up their services for room and board and learning as much as they can along the way, though most don't make it as far as Yunnan!
